German Negation

Whilst in English we use the words "no" and "not" to express negation:

No, I am not at the beach.

In German, there are three main words to use:

Nein, ich bin nicht am Strand. Ich habe keine Badehose.

No, I am not at the beach. I have no swimsuit.

German Negation Basics

Negation With `Nein`

The word nein is used to answer direct questions, where a yes / no response is called for. Fortunately for us, it's never used in the middle of a sentence, and so is pretty straightforward.

Sentence	Ich werde das Angebot annehmen.
Negation	Nein, ich werde das Angebot nicht annehmen.
Translation	No, I won't accept the offer.

Sentence	Ich kann alles mitnehmen.
Negation	Nein, ich kann nicht alles mitnehmen.
Translation	No, I can't take it all.

Sentence	Ich werde an der Veranstaltung teilnehmen.
Negation	Nein, ich werde nicht an der Veranstaltung teilnehmen.
Translation	No, I'm not going attend the event.

German Negation With `Kein/e/en`

The word kein is always placed before a noun, to negate it.

Sentence	Ich habe Ideen.
Negation	Ich habe keine Ideen.
Translation	I have no ideas.

Sentence	Es sind Gäste hier.
Negation	Es sind keine Gäste hier.
Translation	There are no guests here.

Sentence	Sie haben einen Bleistift.
Negation	Sie haben keinen Bleistift.
Translation	You have no pencil.

Negation With `Nicht`

The word nicht can be placed before:

adverbs,
adjectives,
pronouns,
proper nouns,
definite articles,
possessive articles,
prepositions

or after:

declarative sentences

Sentence	Ich rede mit Jenny.
Negating verb	Ich trinke nicht mit Jenny.
Translation	I'm not talking to Jenny.

Sentence	Das ist lecker.
Negating adjective	Das ist nicht lecker.
Translation	That is not tasty.

Sentence	Wir kennen seinen Namen.
Negating sentence	Wir kennen seinen Namen nicht.
Translation	We don't know his name.

Wir haben das noch nie gemacht.

We have never done this before.

Weder... noch [Neither... nor]

Sie haben weder die Kraft noch den Mut.

You have neither the strength nor the courage.

Ich habe weder Schokoladen- noch Vanilleeis.

I have neither chocolate nor vanilla ice cream.

Wir sprechen weder Arabisch noch Spanisch.

We speak neither Arabic nor Spanish.

Niemand [No one / Nobody]

Es ist niemand hier.

There's no one here.

Niemand ist im Haus.

Nobody is at the house.

Ich habe niemanden zum Anrufen.

I have nobody to call.

Nie / Niemals [Never]

Ich würde dich nie verletzen.

I would never hurt you.

Ich fühle mich nie allein.

I never feel alone.

Wir gehen nie in den Wald.

We never go to the forest.

Nirgendwo [Nowhere]

Ich kann nirgendwo hin.

I have nowhere to go.

Die Schere ist nirgendwo zu finden.

The scissors are nowhere to be found.

Man kann nirgendwo parken.

There is nowhere to park.
